Thoughts :
When we need something ... help in doing or acquiring something or for someone... we should first do all in our power to effect this change in the material plane. However, when all in our power comes to naught, then asking the Gods for help is appropriate.
When seeking the Gods' help always be careful and give great thought to what you ask of them. You may find that an unconsidered request may give you what you want, but often not how you wanted it.

There are many forms of Paganism from Alexandrian and Garderian Witchcraft to Feri & Eclectic Wicca ( see below for descriptions). Some paths have well defined levels of achievement while others are less structured & more freeformed. There is also the question of practicing as a Solitary vs being part of a Coven. Many people prefer the Solitary path. It gives them the privacy and ability to follow their own visions wherever they lead. Also solitaries are only answerable to themselves and Diety. Others, however, prefer the closeness & sharing that comes from working in a Coven. Covens work together to achieve the group goals. There is often a High Priest & Priestess, and a structure of elders who teach the newer less experienced members. Some covens last for years while others only a short time and It's a big commitment to join a coven. Coven mates are often as close or closer than family. There is a high level of trust & sharing within a coven which is required to work as a group.
Weather you choose the solitary or group path your connection to yourself & diety is what is most important.

First thing to remember is that every person's path is different. There is not a prescribed "Dogma" that is followed, like the "Big 3". There are some generally accepted precepts that are agreed upon by the majority. "The Wiccan Rede", "The 13 Goals of a Which", and "The Witches Pyramid" are among the more generally agreed upon.
Read, read, read, read, and when your done read more. I cannot stress enough the need for reading. Since this religion is completely de-centralized the first source of information is literature. The problem though is that there are books out there on so many viewpoints that it is often hard to know what to read or where to begin. I suggest starting with Scott Cunningham's : Wicca: A Guide for the Solitary Practitioner (ISBN 0-87542-118-0). It was my first book and helped me form my own beliefs. However, No matter what you read go with your heart (or gut). If it does not make sense or feel right to you feel free to ignore or modify what its saying.
